How old do you think Winnie-the-Pooh is? | The Organic Family

How old do you think Winnie-the-Pooh is?

There is 100-acres, deep in the woods where lives our great friend, Winnie-the-Pooh. This Disney character if one of the most beloved icons of Disney. Some people argue about the actual day Winnie-the-Pooh was born, so to speak. Some say that Winnie was born in 1921. However that is the time that the author, A.A. Milne, gave a teddy bear to his son, Christopher Robin, for his first birthday. Because of those facts Pooh was 91 years old in 2012.

On the other side of the coin some folk feel that Pooh was not born until 1925, That was the time his name changed to Winnie Pooh from Edward Bear.” That would put Winnie at 87 years old. A.A. Milne settles the argument when he wrote in the House at Pooh corner a conversation between Pooh and Christopher Robin.

Christopher Robin asks his beloved Pooh bear to always remember him, even if he lives an entire century. Pooh says yes, but is still curious to know how old that would make him. Christopher tells Pooh that would make him 99 years old. Sadly, Christopher Robin only made it to 75, but pooh kept his promise to always remember him. In fact, pooh is now 90 years old and he and Christopher Robin will remain in the hearts of Winnie the Pooh fans for evermore!

The Beginnings of Winnie-the-Pooh

Winnie was actually named after a couple of animals liked by the Milne family. The two names came from a bear called Winnie and a Swan named Pooh that lived on a lake near by. It’s not clear why Christopher Robin changed the name of his bear from Edward Bear to Winnie-Pooh.

The story began from a bedtime story Alan Milne would tell Christopher Robin about his Pooh bear. A publisher once asked Alan for a Christmas Eve story, Alan’s wife, Daphne, told him as well to write a new bedtime story about Winnie-Pooh. It ended up being the first chapter of because of it’s popularity for, “Winnie-the-Pooh.”

The book “When We Were Young” is how all Pooh bears neighbors from the woods became known: Eeyore, the sad donkey, Piglet, the timid, stuttering baby pig, Kanga, the warmhearted kangaroo mom and Roo, little boy. Tigger, Rabbit and Owl were created down the road, but not in the beginning stories. Over 150,000 copies were sold in the US by the end of 1926 because the world loved this bear and his friends.

Next came the story “Now We Are Six” which came out in 1927 and sold 94,000 copies just the first two months. The final book written in 1928 included our favorite character Tigger and had an astounding 130 printings.

The Reasons People Love Winnie-the-Pooh

Winnie-the-Pooh is portrayed as a helpful friend who is willing to do anything he can to help his friends. He is always seen on his way to melancholy Eeyore’s house or one of his other friends to help them out of a dilemma. His wit may not always be the best, but his love carries him through. The moral learned from Winnie over the past 90 years will continued from now to eternity.
